Linda Garrett Obituary
Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Jun. 23, 2009.
GARRETT, Linda Gregg "Greggie," 62, of Midlothian, went Home to be with her Lord on Saturday, June 20, 2009, after a lengthy, complicated illness. She was the daughter of the late Sara Swayne Gregg and Ellis Clark Gregg. She is survived by her loving husband of 36 years, Stacy F. Garrett III; her loving daughters, Sarabecca Garrett Hayden and her husband, Joseph Hayden, and Rachel Courtney Garrett; her two brothers, Ellis Clark Gregg Jr. and Mark Lawrence Gregg, both of Mindenhall, Pennsylvania; and her sister-in-law, Ann H. Garrett of Virginia Beach. She is also survived by many wonderful cousins, friends and neighbors. Greggie will truly be missed by all of those who knew and loved her. A graduate of Towson State College, Greggie initially taught physical education at Bel Air Middle School in Bel Air, Md.; she later taught elementary school physical education at the former James River Schools until the school closed its doors in January of 1978. When her youngest daughter started middle school, Greggie resumed teaching elementary physical education in the Chesterfield County Public School System, initially as an itinerant and finally as a full-time teacher at J.G. Hening Elementary School, where she taught until her retirement shortly before her death. She was a longtime member of Salisbury Presbyterian Church, where she was a Deacon and member of the Chancel Choir until her health issues forced her to leave the choir. For 25 years, she was the recreation director at SPC's annual Vacation Bible School. Children were Greggie's biggest joy in life, and she was thoroughly at her best when she was around them and teaching them; the kids loved and respected her in return. Greggie never met a person that she did not like, and her captivating smile and quick wit made her the center of most gatherings. She truly loved to be with her family and friends, all of whom will miss her tremendously. The family would like to give special and heart-felt thanks to the many doctors and nurses who treated Greggie in the last years of her life, including but not limited to, Dr. Harold Chung of the MCV Bone Marrow Transplant Center, Dr. Peter Condro, Dr. John Dietrick and Dr. Sigmund Seiler. The nurses are too many to name, but you know who you are and we will never forget you for the fantastic care and friendship you bestowed upon her. She loved you all and so do we. God bless you all! The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, June 26, 2009, before the 2 p.m. Memorial Service which will be held at Salisbury Presbyterian Church, 13621 Salisbury Rd., Midlothian, Va. 23113. A reception will be held immediately thereafter at the church's F&E Hall. Contributions in Greggie's memory may be made to the Salisbury Presbyterian Church Music Program, c/o Salisbury Presbyterian Church, 13621 Salisbury Rd., Midlothian, Va. 23113 or to the VCUHS Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, VCU Medical Center, P.O.
